Sliding Sash Windows in Cornwall and Devon – Crafted by Wood.ED Joinery

Sliding sash windows are a defining feature of many period properties, adding character, elegance, and architectural detail. When restored or replaced correctly, they preserve the original appearance of a building while improving comfort, performance, and day-to-day usability.

At Wood.ED Joinery, we design and manufacture bespoke sliding sash windows for traditional homes, listed buildings, and renovation projects across Cornwall. Every window is made to order, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing techniques to achieve lasting performance while respecting the character of the property.

Why choose sash windows?

Sash windows are valued for their elegant proportions and traditional operation, but older units can often suffer from draughts, sticking sashes, and poor thermal performance.

Modern bespoke timber sash windows retain their traditional appearance while benefiting from improved materials, precision manufacturing, effective draught sealing, and energy-efficient glazing, delivering greater comfort without compromising their character.

What we produce

We manufacture a wide range of bespoke timber windows.

Traditional weighted sash windows

The traditional sliding sash window has remained largely unchanged for centuries because of its simple, effective design. It operates using pulley wheels, cords, and concealed lead or steel counterweights, allowing the sashes to open and close smoothly while remaining perfectly balanced.

Today, this proven design continues to be one of the most versatile and elegant window styles available. Where appropriate, modern features such as discreet draught sealing, energy-efficient double glazing, and improved security can be incorporated while preserving the traditional appearance and character of the window.

Spiral-balanced sash systems

Like traditional weighted sash windows, spring-balanced sash windows are manufactured using a similar construction. Instead of cords, pulley wheels, and counterweights, they use concealed spring balances that are carefully tensioned to support the weight of each sash and provide smooth operation.

Where appropriate, modern features such as discreet draught sealing, energy-efficient double glazing, and enhanced security can be incorporated without compromising the traditional appearance of the window.

Although spring-balanced sash windows are suitable for many properties, we generally do not recommend them in coastal locations. Salt-laden air can accelerate corrosion of the spring mechanisms over time, potentially reducing their service life. For properties close to the coast, we typically recommend traditional weighted sash windows as a more durable long-term solution.

Heritage and Listed style sash windows

Manufactured to replicate existing mouldings, profiles, and architectural details where required, our bespoke timber joinery is designed to preserve the character and heritage of your period property.

Common issues we solve

We often replace sash windows that suffer from:

Restoring period properties

Many of the homes we work on require the careful replacement of original sash windows. In these cases, we replicate existing glazing bars, mouldings, proportions, and other architectural details to ensure the new windows remain true to the character of the original property.

Where appropriate, we can incorporate discreet energy-efficient double glazing while maintaining the slim sightlines that define traditional timber sash windows.

Draughts and heat loss

Whether you’re restoring a listed building or enhancing a contemporary home, we manufacture bespoke timber windows that are tailored to the style and character of the property. From faithfully replicating original architectural details to creating clean, modern designs, every window is made to order.

Bad Repair | Wood.ED Joinery

Built for Cornwall conditions

As with all timber joinery in coastal locations, selecting the right timber and finishing system is essential for long-term performance. We carefully consider exposure to wind, driving rain, and salt-laden air when specifying timber, coatings, and construction details, helping to ensure your joinery performs reliably for many years.

Repair vs replacement

In some cases, sash windows can be repaired rather than fully replaced. We assess each project individually and recommend the most practical solution based on condition, cost and long-term performance.

Our process

  1. Survey and measurement

  2. Design and specification

  3. Manufacture in workshop

  4. Finishing and detailing

  5. Installation or supply

Accuracy at the measurement stage is essential due to the irregularity of older buildings.
