One of the biggest concerns homeowners have when replacing timber windows is whether the new ones will actually look like the originals. It's a reasonable question. Many replacement windows capture the general style of a period property, but small differences in proportions, mouldings or glazing bars can completely change the appearance of a building.


Older homes across Cornwall and Devon weren't built using standard sizes or factory-produced components. Windows were often made by local craftsmen, and each property developed its own subtle variations over time.


At Wood.ED Joinery, we don't start with a catalogue of standard designs. We begin by understanding the original window, how it was made, how the building has changed, and which details give the property its character.


Matching an original window is about far more than copying its appearance. It's about recreating the craftsmanship that made it work in the first place.




Every period window tells a story

Traditional timber windows are full of details that are easy to overlook.


These include:

  • The width of glazing bars

  • The profile of mouldings

  • The depth of meeting rails

  • The proportions of the frame

  • The way the sash sits within the box

  • Original ironmongery and hardware


Individually, these features may seem insignificant. Together, they define how a property looks from both inside and out.

Measuring is about more than dimensions

Many people assume replacing a window simply involves measuring the opening.


In reality, that's only the starting point.

Real project: recreating original Victorian windows in a coastal property using Bespoke Joinery

We recently worked on a Victorian villa overlooking Mount's Bay where several original sash windows had been replaced during the 1980s with standard softwood units.

Although functional, the replacements looked noticeably different from the surviving original windows elsewhere in the house.


The glazing bars were too thick.


The meeting rails sat almost 20mm deeper than the originals.


The horn details had been simplified, and the proportions disrupted the symmetry of the front elevation.


Our first task was to study the remaining original windows.


Using profile gauges and detailed measurements, we recreated:

  • The original ovolo mouldings

  • Matching glazing bar dimensions

  • Traditional meeting rail profiles

  • Decorative sash horns

  • Original pulley positions


During the survey, we also discovered that the masonry openings varied by up to 14mm due to gradual settlement over more than a century.


Each new window was therefore manufactured individually rather than to a standard size.


We used Accoya for the external frames because of the property's exposed coastal position and fitted slimline double glazing that preserved the original sightlines.


During installation, stainless steel A4 fixings and breathable sealing tapes were used throughout, allowing the surrounding granite walls to continue managing moisture naturally.


Once completed, visitors could no longer distinguish the replacement windows from the surviving originals without looking closely at the improved glazing.




Why standard windows rarely suit period homes

Modern factory-produced windows are designed around standard dimensions and standard profiles.


Period buildings rarely conform to either.


Common differences include:

  • Uneven masonry openings

  • Handmade brickwork or stonework

  • Slight variations between supposedly identical windows

  • Historic movement within the structure

  • Original craftsmanship that predates modern manufacturing tolerances


Attempting to fit a standard frame into these openings often creates visible gaps, oversized trims or awkward proportions.


Bespoke manufacturing avoids these compromises.




Matching traditional joinery techniques

Appearance is only one part of the process.


Traditional windows were built using construction methods that remain effective today.


We commonly use:

  • Mortise and tenon joints

  • Laminated timber where additional stability is beneficial

  • Traditional moulding profiles

  • Carefully proportioned glazing bars

  • Precision-machined rebates for modern glazing


Combining traditional joinery with modern manufacturing allows us to reproduce historic details while improving long-term performance.




Balancing heritage with modern performance

Matching the original design doesn't mean accepting the original shortcomings.


Where appropriate, modern improvements can be incorporated discreetly.


These may include:

  • Slimline double glazing

  • Hidden draught-proofing systems

  • Improved weather seals

  • Modern security hardware

  • Better drainage detailing


The objective is for the improvements to remain largely invisible while making the windows warmer, quieter and easier to operate.




Why photographs aren't enough

Homeowners often ask whether we can reproduce a window from photographs.


Photographs are useful, but they rarely capture the information needed for accurate reproduction.


They don't show:

  • Joint construction

  • Timber condition

  • Subtle moulding profiles

  • Frame depth

  • Hidden movement within the opening

  • Variations caused by centuries of settlement


A detailed on-site survey provides information that simply cannot be gathered from images alone.




Working with listed buildings

For listed properties, matching the original design becomes even more important.


Conservation officers often expect replacement windows to replicate:

  • Existing profiles

  • Original proportions

  • Opening methods

  • Traditional materials

  • Historic detailing


Because every listed building is different, we manufacture each window specifically for its location rather than adapting a standard design.


This approach also makes future repairs much easier, as every component has been designed to suit the building from the outset.
